What to Look for When Buying a Used 4 Wheeler/ATV
You probably do not have an unlimited budget for a 4 wheeler if you are interested in used AVTs which is why it is necessary to be very careful when looking for the best deal. It is important to be aware that many owners of 4 wheelers push their vehicles to their limits and drive them in impossible conditions. In addition, you are on your own if it does not work as it should after you buy it. Unlike new 4 wheelers that come with a warranty in case if there are any problems, there is no such guarantee with used vehicles.
Buying a used 4 wheeler is pretty much like buying a used car. You should first determine what kind of terrain vehicle you actually want before starting to search the adds for used 4 wheelers in your local magazines or online. Take yourself some time to go through different models and options to determine which one meets you needs (and budget) the most. When you determine what kind of 4 wheeler you want, you can focus on the tougher part of the job which is to find the desired model in the best condition possible.
Finding a used 4 wheeler is not difficult, however, finding one in a good condition is a completely different story because these terrain vehicles are typically used for rough terrain or for fun which means that many of them are not in the best condition when their owners decide that it is time to sell them. For that reason you should check it out in person before you make any deals as the pictures often do not reveal much about the vehicle's condition. After all, people who are selling used 4 wheelers, just like those who are selling used cars want to get the best price possible and some may not provide honest answers about the vehicle's use nor its condition.
When you find an add for a used 4 wheeler that may be right for you, you should contact the seller and arrange a visit to be able to inspect the vehicle. This may problematic with online auctions because some may not provide direct contact with the seller or do not give you enough time to check out the vehicle before the auction is closed. However, resist the temptation of buying a 4 wheeler without seeing it first even if it has a great price and is said to be used for hunting. In reality, many are ragged out, especially those that are said to be as good as new and are offered at a very low price.
When you finally find a 4 wheeler that appears decent, you should prepare yourself for some thorough inspection of the vehicle. Firstly, look at it as a whole and ask yourself if you like what you see and if the AVT looks like being taken care of well. The first impression reveals much more than you may think. For instance, pay attention if it is clean. If the vehicle is dirty and neglected you can pretty much guess how it was taken care of if the seller did not even bother to wash it to sell it. But even if it is clean and shiny, that does not necessarily mean that was treated “gently“.
Do not feel embarrassed and take yourself as much time you think you need for a thorough check up. To be able to evaluate the condition of the vehicle take a close look at the paint, plastic, switches and other visible parts. Look for scratches and dents revealing crashes, take a look at the bottom of the vehicle with a flashlight to see if there are any signs of damage, and pay attention to residues of mud and dirt that are usually missed by car washes. All the mentioned factors reveal a lot about the way the vehicle was ridden. While inspecting the AVT, be sure to ask the seller about the mileage, year model, problems, the vehicle's uses, etc. You may not get completely honest answers, however, it is worth to try because some people do not know to lie. If you are lucky, you will be able to tell if the seller is lying.
If you like the 4 wheeler after thorough inspection, ask for a test ride to be able to feel how it performs. In case you are refused, say goodbye and continue reading the adds for used 4 wheelers. If you are allowed to take a test ride, be sure to check everything you can from the maximum speed to brakes and lights. If you are not sure about the whole thing, take yourself some time to think it over and try another used 4 wheeler to see the difference. But if you think that the vehicle is right for you, you can make the deal and hope that it will perform well for some
